Trujillo Festivals and Events: Photo of seasonal Peruvian processionIf possible, do try and time your visit to Trujillo with one or two of the seasonal festivals that take place each year in this part of Peru. Many events and things to do around Trujillo are often religious in their nature, and few Peruvian celebrations come much bigger than the Easter Holy Week, which is known as Semana Santa and is held the week prior to Easter Sunday, in late March or at the beginning of April.

The arrival of spring in late September is cause for further festivities and the International Spring Festival of Trujillo (El Festival Internacional de la Primavera) is of particular note. This popular event dates back to 1950 and features some very colourful parades, along with 'totora' horse regattas, open-air concerts, fashion shows, bull fighting, beauty contests, dancing, and even surfing contests.

If you are in Trujillo on a Sunday morning, then do check out the weekly flag-raising ceremony, which takes place at 08:00 on the Plaza de Armas and comes complete with Peruvian dancing (marinera) and pacing horses (caballos de paso).

The National Independence Day (Fiestas Patrias) is another celebration of note and takes place throughout Peru on both July 28th and July 29th.

If you are holidaying in Trujillo during the last week of January, then the Fiesta de la Marinera is one event to look out for. Lasting an entire week, the fiesta is the national marinera (coastal dance) competition. Also worth looking out for are the various beauty contests and horsemanship demonstrations (caballos de paso).
